The Practical Dog Trainer Book
A behavior-first, step-by-step foundation for those new to dog training
Price: $269.00 Book & LIVE 1:1 with Kate (see below for more details)
Price: $69.00 Book ONLY
The Practical Dog Trainer Program is a behavior-first, step-by-step educational program designed for individuals who are new to dog training and want a structured, science-based foundation rooted in canine psychology and learning theory.
Rather than focusing on tools, techniques, or cue-based scripts, this program emphasizes comprehension of behavior, how and why behavior is created, reinforced, and maintained. Participants will study the principles of learning theory, the role of human timing and mechanics, and the environmental and emotional factors that influence a dog’s ability to learn, particularly in real-world settings where many training methods fail.
Delivered as a comprehensive informational packet, the program is organized as a guided self-study curriculum. Concepts progress from foundational principles to more complex applications, incorporating required reading, research-based resources, and structured reflection questions to support understanding and critical thinking. The goal is not memorization, but the development of analytical skills necessary to assess behavior, identify human error, and make informed, ethical training decisions.
This book is educational in nature, however, you can include a virtual 1 1/2 hour Zoom session with Kate after completion of reading and answering all questions/tasks in the book. During the Zoom session with Kate she will go over your answers and notes from each section to discuss and answer any questions you have. Zoom session must be completed within 10 weeks of purchase. *If more time is needed you will need to let Kate know via email within 6 weeks of purchase (kate@kk9privatetrainer.com)
It is intended to provide a strong theoretical and practical foundation for individuals who plan to pursue further education.
Best suited for:
-
Individuals considering a career in dog training
-
Those new to dog training seeking a psychology and learning theory driven foundation
-
Learners who value understanding behavior over quick fixes or trend-based methods
Not intended for:
-
Experienced trainers seeking advanced case analysis or individualized coaching
-
Individuals looking for certification, in person mentorship, or hands-on instruction.

Pre-Recorded classes
$75 (includes ALL classes)
These pre-recorded classes are designed for pet parents who want to better understand their dog’s behavior through the lens of canine psychology, learning theory, and real-world application, not quick fixes, tools, or scripted obedience routines. Each class focuses on why behavior happens, how learning actually works, and how human actions, environment, and emotion influence outcomes. Rather than telling you what to do with your dog, these classes teach you how to think, observe, and make sense of behavior so you can approach training and daily life with clarity and confidence. All classes are educational in nature, self-paced, and pre-recorded. They do not include dog-specific training plans, behavior modification protocols, or individualized feedback. The goal is understanding first, because without understanding, progress is accidental.
What is included:
Full series for a comprehensive understanding of how dogs learn and behave. A must for training success.
Classes include:
-
Why Dogs Do What They Do
An introduction to behavior, reinforcement, and why dogs repeat behaviors that work, whether we like them or not. -
Why Training Falls Apart Outside the House
Understanding environment, arousal, and competing motivators, and why “they know it at home” doesn’t translate to real-world learning. -
Calm Is Not a Command
What calm actually is, why it can’t be forced, and how emotional regulation differs from obedience or suppression. -
Understanding Reactivity (Without Labels)
A science-based look at reactivity, stress, fear, and frustration, and why labeling dogs often blocks real progress. -
Why Your Dog Ignores You
Reinforcement history, timing, consistency, and why dogs aren’t being stubborn or defiant. -
Leash Pulling: A Learning Theory Perspective
Why pulling works for dogs, why tools don’t teach, and how behavior is unintentionally reinforced on walks. -
How Humans Accidentally Train the Wrong Behavior
Common human errors, delayed reinforcement, emotional responses, and inconsistency, and how they shape behavior over time. -
Stress, Arousal, and Learning
How stress impacts the brain, why tired doesn’t mean calm, and why learning breaks down under pressure. -
Why Quick Fixes Don’t Work
Behavior change vs. behavior suppression, realistic expectations, and what meaningful progress actually looks like.
Together these classes create a complete educational framework. These classes build a cohesive understanding of:
-
how dogs learn
-
how behavior is created and maintained
-
how environment and emotion affect performance
-
how human behavior influences outcomes
Completing the full series allows concepts to layer and connect, giving you a clearer, more accurate understanding of your dog’s behavior across situations, not just isolated issues.
Important Notes
-
These classes are educational, not training programs
-
No individualized behavior plans or coaching are included

Trainer on demand
This is an add on feature (comes with customized training automatically). If you purchase single LIVE 1:1classes , Q&A session, or pre recorded classes you can add this option on.
What is Trainer on Demand? Its the ability for you to send me daily videos of the training games provided throught my classes where I can review them, provide guidance to keep you communicating correctly AND help you advance when needed. Dog training is trial and error and I help remove that for you so training doesn't stall. This is all done through an app where you will be provided a link to download (app is free for you to download)
Cost: $175/week OR $400 for 4 weeks
This is an amazing offer helping you not only get through the training class you purchased but much further as I am able to give you daily guidance and continue your advancement throughout the week(s).
Sometimes training might feel like it's not working but honestly it's human error that causes the problem. Timing and communication is of upmost importance so let me handle that for you so your training goes smoothly.
